Couples Therapy Online
Despite the intellectual awareness that no relationship is perfect and that all relationships will encounter challenges, it can feel incredibly isolating and oftentimes shameful to navigate issues in one’s partnership(s) and/or marriage. Couples often present the best version of their relationship to others, and romantic partners are often a primary source of emotional support. Therefore, it can be difficult to know who to turn to when we experience problems in our romantic relationships.
Although I will work with each couple to craft a treatment approach that caters to their unique needs, my primary theoretical foundations include psychodynamic and emotionally focused couples psychotherapy. One assumption of psychodynamic theory is that past experiences influence present-day experiences. This is particularly relevant to couples therapy, as our parents serve as a foundational model for romantic relationships. Misunderstandings and miscommunications often arise in relationships because each partner’s subjective experience of the present is influenced, in part, by their own unique childhood experiences and cultural identities. My goal as a couples therapist is to help each partner understand how their backgrounds influence the ways in which they show up in their relationship, while also encouraging each partner to speak to their own emotions and subjective experiences, rather than dwelling on complaints about their significant other.
My primary specialty areas include:
Same-sex and/or LGBTQIA+ couples
Challenges navigating open and/or polyamorous relationships
Long-distance relationships
Communication and/or conflict resolution concerns
Intimacy concerns
